Palliative Care

Who is palliative care for?

Palliative care at Abafields supports people whose illness is no longer curable and whose care is focused on comfort, dignity and quality of life.

It may be appropriate for people who:

  • Have been told their illness is no longer curable and time may be limited
  • Need comfort-focused care rather than ongoing treatment
  • Cannot safely or comfortably remain at home during their final weeks or days

Many families come to us when caring at home has become too difficult or when someone’s condition changes and their needs increase. Choosing palliative care is not giving up. It is about ensuring someone’s final chapter is handled with comfort, dignity and compassion.

Palliative Care

Our Approach

Palliative care at Abafields is guided by one principle: the person’s comfort, dignity and wishes always come first. Our experienced team provides calm, compassionate support and understands when to offer care, reassurance or simply quiet presence.

Family and friends are welcome at any time, with no visiting hours, and we support you through both the emotional and practical aspects of this time.

When someone passes away at Abafields, they are cared for with dignity and respect, and families are given the time and space to say goodbye.

Palliative Care

The important questions

What is palliative care?

Palliative care focuses on comfort, dignity and quality of life when someone is approaching the end of their life. Rather than trying to cure illness, the goal is to manage pain and symptoms, provide emotional support, and ensure someone's remaining time is as peaceful and meaningful as possible.

Who is palliative care for?

Palliative care at Abafields is for people whose illness is no longer curable and who need comfort-focused support in their final weeks or days. It's for those who cannot remain at home safely or whose family cannot provide round-the-clock care, and who would benefit from a peaceful, caring environment.

When is palliative care needed?

Palliative care becomes appropriate when focus shifts from treatment to comfort—typically when doctors indicate time is limited and quality of remaining life matters most. It's needed when someone requires pain management, personal care and emotional support that's difficult to provide at home without professional help.

What funding and support is available for palliative care?

Palliative care may be funded through NHS Continuing Healthcare if someone meets eligibility criteria, or through self-funding if not. We'll help you understand options and navigate the process. At such a difficult time, we aim to make practical matters as straightforward as possible.
